During the renovation of the Augustow Canal, archeological studies were carried out in the area of sluices and other facilities as well as on their adjacent sites.
Due to the archaeological excavations conducted before the renovation of the Canal by the archeologists of the Institute of History of The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, a Stone Age settlement was discovered near the village of Nemnovo. The archeologists found 3384 artefacts: silicon tools, arrowheads of different shapes, stone artefacts, fragments of pottery.
These artefacts attest to the fact that people settled along the banks of the Chornaya Hancha 10 thousand years ago.
