The Nemnovo sluice of the Augustow Canal is an architectural hydrotechnical engineering monument. It was being constructed from 1924 to 1939. The Augustow Canal is designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated in Poland and Russia and joins the Neman, the Vistula rivers as well as seven lakes. Four sluices are on the Belarusian side of the Canal. It includes the Dombrovka, the Volkushek, the Kuzhinets (Kurkul) and the Nemnovo sluices.
The Nemnovo sluice including both the Belarusian and the Polish parts is one of the biggest throughout the Augustow Canal.
Nowadays the sluice shows all the hydrotechnical engineering power of the Augustow Canal. The difference in water level runs to 10 meters and the sluicing takes about an hour. The metal gate of the sluice weighs around six tons. Despite the fact that the sluice was rather dilapidated, the restores did their utmost to restore its original form.
The Nemnovo sluice is an outstanding sight of the Republic of Belarus. Today, the sluice is a kind of a water bridge between Belarus and Russia as it was almost a century ago.
